2014 COROFIN PINOT NOIR SETTLEMENT VINEYARD EAST SLOPE

‘Sculpted wine of supple fruit and yet some of the expected ample, regional generosity. It shows a plumpness of perfume in dark cherry, choc-dipped strawberries, twigs and undergrowth. The palate is rich in darker spectrum fruit carried in a muscular yet succulent flex of flavour. It finishes soft and with a smudge of leathery tannin. It’s very good drinking.’ 93 points

2014 COROFIN PINOT NOIR COWLEY FAMILY VINEYARD MAIN SLOPES

‘Lithe, firm, squeaky pinot noir of brisk, crisp red fruitiness, herbal lifts and an amaro like tang to acidity - it all works well together. Fine, sleek tannins keep the wine in check, it hurtles in a dart-shape to its spicy, puckering close. Needs time to find its feet a bit, but certainly has some energy and individual personality. I like it.’ 92+ - Mike Bennie, thewinefront.com.au, Aug 2016

'The 2014 Cowley Family Vineyard Main Slopes Pinot Noir has a pale ruby-purple color and nose of minted raspberries, kirsch and violets with garrigue and mossy bark hints. Light-bodied and delicately flavours with buckets of finesse and nuances, it has a silken texture and long lively finish.'  91+

2014 COROFIN PINOT NOIR SETTLEMENT VINEYARD EAST SLOPE

‘Pale to medium ruby-purple colored, the 2014 Settlement Vineyard East Slope Pinot Noir has a gentle stem and dried herb character of the core of red currants, red cherries and cranberries plus hints of lavender, dried leaves and cloves. Medium-bodied, it gives youthful, delicate perfumed red fruit and chewy tannins with a lively backbone and some minerals in the long finish.’ 91 - Lisa Perrotti-Brown M.W., eRobertParker.com, #224 Apr 2016

EARLIER VINTAGES ...

Michael Cooper
‘Corofin is a new venture by Mike Paterson (formerly winemaker at Jackson Estate) and his wife, Anna. From young vines on clay soils in the Omaka Valley, the 2012 vintage (4.5*) is a highly auspicious debut. Matured in mostly seasoned French oak casks and bottled unfined and unfiltered, it is deep ruby, with a fragrant, plummy, spicy bouquet. Mouthfilling, with ripe cherry, plum, spice and nut flavours, it is savoury and silky, with excellent complexity and a long, finely textured finish. A very graceful wine, it's already delicious, but should be at its best 2015+.’

‘Medium deep ruby-red, even hearted, a little garnet on rim. The nose is subtle and gentle with red berry fruit aromas, seamlessly interwoven with delicate layers of whole bunch savoury elements. The oaking is very sensitive, and the bouquet builds in depth, showing savoury herbs and florals. Medium- bodied and restrained in expression, delicate flavours of red berries and red florals are harmoniously melded with savoury herb elements.  The palate has a smooth flow, showing its richness stylishly, and unfolding savoury and spicy nuances. The extraction is positive and the tannins are silky, and there is excellent presence with great understatement. A soft, red-fruited lingering finish completes the wine. This will continue to develop richness and subtle interest over the next 5-6 years. Serve with poultry and pork. Hand-picked fruit, predominantly clone 777 with 667 from the ‘East Slope’ of the ‘Settlement Vineyard’, Omaka Valley from vines around 10 y.o., indigenous yeast fermented with 80% whole berries and 20% whole cluster to 13.5% alc., the wine spending 25 days on skins and aged  11 months in 3 and 4 y.o. French oak barrels. 94 dozen made. 18.0+/ 20 Mar 2014 RRP $45.00’

‘This is very limited in quantity, but we felt compelled to review it because it really is quite delicious, and an example of the finest Pinot Noirs coming out of Marlborough. This one has very good vineyard breeding and it shows in the wine. Full of interesting flavours, including orange blossom, Dukkah and dried cranberries, the fruit and gentle spice are perfectly balanced out by very well-integrated tannin. Worth seeking out, snapping up, and laying down for a another good 5 years. Find on wine-searcher.com

'Pinot noir may make lighter bodied wines, but the earthy savoury note that many possess works well with the flavours of the season.
This elegant example is an auspicious first release from the new organic/biodynamic label started by ex-Jackson Estate winemaker, Mike Paterson and partner Anna. Dark berry fruit is wrapped in a satin-like texture that unfurls to reveal layers of dried herb, mineral and peppery spice notes over a savoury gamey element. Lovely with lamb shanks. From Great Little Vineyards, The Village Winery.'
